Do not buy a device and assume it lasts a week. Measure how much water each pot uses, reduce avoidable heat and sun stress, trial the complete system while home, and arrange a backup check for longer or high-stakes trips.

Seven days is a test condition, not a product promise
Container water demand changes with plant size, pot material, potting mix, sunlight, temperature, airflow, and weather. Extension guidance notes that containers may need frequent checking in hot, dry conditions, while excess water can also damage roots.
That is why a label such as “vacation watering” cannot answer the duration question by itself. Your goal is to reproduce the trip conditions while you are still home and watch the reservoir, soil moisture, drainage, and room surfaces.
Measure a baseline
For several normal watering cycles, measure the amount added to each pot and the number of days until it needs water again. Keep the plants in the intended trip location. If the forecast or room temperature will be very different, build extra margin rather than extrapolating a perfect average.
Use the baseline to identify outliers. A thirsty large pot may need its own reservoir or a human check, while a slower-drying herb may be safer left on its usual routine.

- Measure water added, rather than estimating by watering-can time.
- Record runoff and empty standing water.
- Note unusually hot, sunny, or windy days.
Choose the least complex reliable method
For one or two small pots, a properly trialed self-watering container or wick may be enough. A group of compatible pots can justify a shared reservoir. Pump systems add control but also add power, tubing, and failure points.
Choose the simplest method that passed your full-duration test. Do not move indoor herbs into a bathtub or a dark room for convenience unless the light and drainage consequences have been considered.
Run a contained rehearsal
Place the entire system in its trip position, fill the reservoir to the planned level, and operate it for the expected absence plus a safety margin. Check the floor or shelf under the tray, every tube connection, the reservoir level, and the moisture of each pot.
Test the failure modes as well: what happens if a line moves, a wick loses contact, power stops, or one dripper flows faster? A large waterproof tray can contain routine drainage, but it is not permission to leave a known leak.
- Keep reservoirs stable and below any edge where they could fall.
- Use no permanent plumbing or unattended faucet connection.
- Keep electrical parts and connections away from wet surfaces.
- Leave a written stop instruction for the person checking the apartment.
Prepare the plants and the backup
Before leaving, remove dead material, confirm drainage openings are clear, and avoid making major changes such as repotting. Move pots only to a location that you have already tested for light and temperature.
For a trip where plant loss or property damage would matter, ask someone to check the setup. Leave measured instructions instead of “water if dry,” and make it easy to shut off or remove the system if anything looks wrong.
