The planning equation

A useful starting estimate is: measured daily water use × days away × a modest planning factor. The factor accounts for normal variation; it is not a license to double the reservoir and hope.

Calculate the pots separately because one large basil plant can behave differently from a smaller thyme pot. Use the higher reasonable daily value observed under conditions similar to the trip.

  • Pot planning volume = observed daily use × days away.
  • System planning volume = sum of compatible pot volumes.
  • Trial volume = system planning volume plus a modest, explicit margin.
  • Final fill = the smallest tested volume that leaves the planned margin.

How to measure daily use

Start after the pot has drained from a normal watering. Measure the next addition and the elapsed time until the same moisture threshold is reached. Repeat across several cycles and note heat, sun, and wind.

Do not count runoff as plant use. If much of the measured addition immediately leaves the pot, improve the watering method or potting mix before using the number to size a reservoir.

A worked planning example

Suppose three compatible pots used 120, 150, and 90 milliliters per day during the warmest representative observations. For seven days, the unadjusted total is 2,520 milliliters. Adding a 20 percent planning margin would produce 3,024 milliliters.

That figure is only the starting test volume. Connect a reservoir near that size, run it for the full period while home, and observe whether each pot receives the intended amount. If the system flows unevenly, a larger reservoir will not fix the distribution.

Capacity is also a property-risk decision

Every extra liter increases the possible spill if the reservoir or a line fails. Place the reservoir on a stable surface, keep the volume limited to the tested need, and route water where a problem is visible.

If the required volume is too large for the apartment’s containment plan, split the system, reduce plant demand with a previously tested location, or arrange a human refill. Do not solve uncertainty only by adding more unattended water.

When to recalculate

Recalculate when plants grow substantially, seasons change, pots move outdoors, the potting mix changes, or the tubing layout is rebuilt. Previous measurements belong to the previous system.

Keep the worksheet with the setup photo and trip instructions. That makes the decision auditable and gives a backup person a clear baseline.
